Aldermen’s building

Mechelen’s tourist information office opened in the historical Schepenhuis, or Aldermen’s building, on September 9th 2018. It is manned by experts on the local area who help visitors get the most out of their visit to Mechelen, so it is the ideal first port of call. It is also conveniently located between the four central points of the city: the Grote Markt, IJzerenleen, St Rumbold’s Tower and the Bruul.

As the first stone town hall to be built in Flanders, Mechelen’s Schepenhuis is steeped in history. In the thirteenth century it served as the town hall and meeting place of the municipal court of justice and in the fifteenth century as the seat of the Great Council and the Parliament of Mechelen when the city became the juridical centre of the Burgundian Netherlands under the rule of Charles the Bold.

Municipal academy, museum, city archive and city library, the building went on to perform numerous other roles. In September 2018 the building saw its latest incarnation as the brand-new home of Visit Mechelen, the tourist information office.

Accessibility

Our information office was awarded the Accessibility Label of Tourism Flanders.

The tourist information office is accessible by wheelchair via Vleeshouwersstraat. From this entrance, the reception area and the visitor area on the first floor can be reached by stairs and a vertical platform lift. The reception and visitor area are spacious and well laid out. There is a sanitary block with a spacious adapted toilet in the basement. This is accessible by stairs and lift. The desk and experience elements are adapted for wheelchairs. The text of the Burgundian application was read in for the blind and visually impaired. Consideration was also given to contrasts and fonts.
