Garden tour at Museum Hof van Busleyden

Walking through lush Renaissance gardens

Discover a green oasis in three private museum gardens around Museum Hof van Busleyden. All of them inspired by the lush gardens of the Renaissance. Five hundred years ago, Hieronymus van Busleyden built his imposing residence here. Together with a guide, you will take a walk in the gardens, where something different is blooming every day.

It’s no coincidence that the large courtyard garden – the hortus catalogue or science garden – is an ode to Mechelen’s botanist Rembert Dodoens. Many of the plants he described in his 1554 Kruidenboek (Herbal book) can be seen here. In spring, a succession of snowdrops, crocuses, daffodils and thousands of tulip bulbs come into bloom. In summer, more floral wonders provide a colourful colour spectacle.

Walk through the colonnade and along the carillon to the second courtyard garden. This is a place of pleasure, a hortus ludi or garden of lusts. Here you can spot special plant species that are a nod to the precious collections of plants, corals and animals that humanists collected for centuries. Finally, the guide will take you to the modern meditation garden, an intimate place for reflection and silence.
