In the footsteps of Hieronymus and Margareta

This guided walk takes in Mechelen’s Burgundian highlights. You will travel 500 years back in time with your guide to the city’s golden age, when Mechelen was the rich capital of the Burgundian Netherlands.

In those days, Mechelen was a magnet for noblemen and enlightened minds, partly because the city was the seat of the Great Council, the highest court in the Burgundian Netherlands. You will follow in the footsteps of two influential figures from that prosperous period, Margareta of Austria and Hieronymus van Busleyden. Prepare to be astonished!

The city’s impressive history will be revealed as you visit a number of architectural gems – inside and out. You will see the Schepenhuis – Aldermen’s Building - where the Great Council had its seat, and admire the brand-new Museum Hof van Busleyden. Your ticket for the museum is valid for the whole day.

You can, of course, walk on your own if you prefer! Pop along to Visit Mechelen where copies of the ‘In the footsteps of Margareta’ brochure of walks are on sale.
