The Art Hour (Het Kunstuur)
The Art Hour presents 32 masterpieces from the period 1887 – 1938 in the ancient and atmospherically-lit Chapel of the Holy Ghost, immediately opposite St Rumbold’s Tower. Each work of art is accompanied by a story told by a well-known or lesser-known Fleming and complemented by well-chosen music. This makes for an extraordinary experience, a magical hour of art like no other.
What to expect?
A packed hour of art
A visit to The Art Hour lasts exactly one hour. Every 20 minutes a maximum of eight visitors can enjoy this intimate experience. It is therefore essential that you book in advance on the website and also that you arrive on time!
Art experience like no other
The artworks are lit one by one. Wearing headphones, visitors listen to the music and stories. The narrators are well-known or lesser-known Flemings who are projected next to the artwork. They talk about their connection with the artwork or the artist.
The setting for this extraordinary exhibition is the Chapel of the Holy Ghost (Heilige Geestkapel) and the adjoining House of the Holy Ghost (Heilige Geesthuis) in Mechelen. The chapel dates from the end of the thirteenth century and has been a listed building since1938. The chapel is located opposite St Rumbold’s Cathedral on the corner of Minderbroedersgang.
The 32 chefs-d’oeuvre by Belgian artists date from the period 1887-1938. More than two-thirds of the paintings are privately owned and rarely put on public display.
The other works are loans from Belgian and French museums.
