The grounds of Roosendael Abbey
The site of the former Roosendael Abbey was recently voted the most beautiful place in the municipality of Sint-Katelijne-Waver. And rightly so! The monumental gatehouse and coach-house are vestiges of the thirteenth-century abbey, once home to Cistercian nuns. But these days Roosendael is all about relaxation, culture and recreation. A variety of accommodation (youth hostel, hikers' huts, camping) is available in the grounds for groups and individuals.
Roosendael is also known for its superb wildlife sanctuary on the River Nete, so keep an eye open for birds and rare plants while out cycling or walking. Alternatively, visit Fort Walem for an exciting war story. At the end of an energetic day, the convivial bikers' café with its child-friendly terrace is an ideal place to relax.
