Relishing the riverside

Follow the 'Pallieteren' bicycle route alongside the River Nete and you can enjoy a delightful stretch of countryside and its cultural heritage. Lier, the town where writer Felix Timmerman's character Pallieter lived, is as pretty as a picture. And it's a place to enjoy excellent food and drink. Bon viveurs should certainly check it out!

The route leads alongside the meandering Grote and Kleine Nete, bordered with tall pink Himalayan balsam. You'll pass a Palladian villa, large, old farmhouses, fine castles set in extensive grounds and Gestel, one of the most attractive villages in the Province of Antwerp. And of course cafés galore serving delicious local beers.

No wonder that pleasure-loving Pallieter has become part of the Dutch language - a verb even! Who knows, perhaps like Timmermans' famous scion, you will fall in love with this beautiful region...
