Guided tour of Kazerne Dossin
The former barracks in Mechelen known as Kazerne Dossin is now a very special place of remembrance. Between 1942 and 1944 it was the site of the Nazis' 'SS Sammellager Mecheln' transit camp. For more than 25,000 Jews and 350 gypsies it was literally the waiting-room of death, for it was here that they were put on trains for Auschwitz–Birkenau where they were murdered.
Now standing opposite the Dossin memorial is a brand-new museum designed by leading architect bOb Van Reeth. It traces the history of the Holocaust, which was prepared in our own country. But the historic story of racist persecution is taken a step further. The temporary exhibitions in particular will ask questions about human rights issues today.
